UnBoxing | Hasbro’s MARVEL LEGENDS: JEAN GREY, THE PHOENIX

A Collectible Figure Unboxing

A landmark classic character and one of the most celebrated story arcs in comic book history, Hasbro’s MARVEL LEGENDS gives JEAN GREY, THE PHOENIX, the deluxe treatment and the embodiment of the Phoenix Force itself.

COVER ART

First introduced in 1963, appearing in The X-Men #1, as a founding member and student of Professor Charles Xavier’s School for Gifted Students, Jean Grey made a striking debut. Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby during the Marvel Comics renaissance, as Marvel Girl, Jean at the time is the only female among her classmates of mutants, individuals born with an x-gene that gives them extraordinary abilities that set them apart from the rest of mankind. She remains the heart and soul of the group. She is the first student recruited by Xavier in his efforts to affect the prejudice mankind has against mutants, even as his longtime adversary prepares a counter-narrative to subvert homo-sapiens to the will of homo-superior.

Though it is not generally known during her early years as an X-Man, Jean is one of only a handful of mutants considered Omega-level, which is a classification for members of the species capable of extraordinary power levels. It isn’t until a fateful mission to the stars, when her teammates are in extreme peril, that Jean makes the profoundly personal sacrifice — navigating their escape shuttle back through the Earth’s atmosphere. While the rest of the team retreats to the protected area of the ship, Jean uses her telekinetic abilities to create a shield to fend off lethal radiation levels. Her exposure and commitment to the selfless act do not go unnoticed and draw the attention of the Phoenix Force (Uncanny X-Men #101, Oct. 1976)

The classic issue introduced THE PHOENIX!

Bargaining for the lives of her teammates, Jean agrees to switch places with the Phoenix Force, who proceeds to impersonate Jean for several months while placing her safely in a cocoon state at the bottom of the Hudson River. Ultimately, the fate of The Phoenix leads to markedly one of the most iconic storylines in Marvel Comics history and the apparent death of The Phoenix/Jean Grey in a classic epic cosmic confrontation written by Chris Claremont and John Byrne. “The Dark Phoenix Saga” ran from Uncanny X-Men #129 (Jan 1980) through Uncanny X-Men #138 (Oct 1980), culminating in the second-greatest sacrifice in the arc of the character. After mourning the loss of Jean Grey, years later, comic book readers would discover the truth when Jean Grey is released from her hibernation.

Formidable Force

The backstory behind the decision to transform Jean Grey into one of the most formidable and powerful characters in the Marvel Universe and ultimately knock her off the pedestal she had created for herself was chronicled in 1984’s Phoenix: The Untold Story, which reprinted Uncanny X-Men #137 and for the first time featured the controversial alternate ending. The printed magazine includes a transcript of the creative roundtable discussion surrounding the opinions that resulted in the printed conclusion versus the unpublished edition, which was dramatically different and might have set the character along a different path.

The decision to land on the death of The Phoenix was primarily hailed as a wildly creative maneuver in comic book writing, and the resulting retcon of that act later to reintroduce Jean Grey (and eventually resuscitate The Phoenix Force persona) was equally a turning point in the growing X-Men mythology. Jean Grey would rejoin the originating X-Men, this time as a founding member of X-Factor, before eventually returning to the X-Men, where the heroine would accept her role front and center as one of that group’s leading figures, leaving behind her image as Marvel Girl. Jean Grey remains a major component of the storyline today and wholeheartedly embraces her infinite power.

To mark the 60 Anniversary of the X-Men and their influence across all genres of the Marvel Universe, Hasbro continues to expand on its line of Marvel Legends action figures and has given collectors Jean Grey and The Phoenix Force in all its fiery presence to add to their collection of action figures based on the heroic universe.
