A Collectible Unboxing Feature
The McFarlane Toys DC Multiverse action figure line-up just got a little rough trade by adding a true DC Classic, the mighty MIDNIGHTER! The bad-ass brawler makes his multi-necessary and fully-articulated debut in 7 inches nonetheless!
Since acquiring the brand rights to manufacture action figures under the “DC Multiverse” Mcfarlane Toys has been fast-tracking the offerings. From the standard releases to the “Gold Label Collections”, and even Mega (larger-scale) Figures, adult collectors have eagerly sought out all that the star comics illustrator and toy designer has had to offer. Among many of the most favorite recent figures have included the WB100 Batman Movie collection, which includes 7” representations of the Caped Crusader as seen in each iteration of the modern movie era.
McFarlane Toys also has the licensing on the latest blockbuster theatrical Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom starring Jason Momoa and has several versions of the King of the Seven Seas for collectors to fish for, not excluding Ocean Master and the villainous Black Manta. The toy franchise has also been keen to make things a lot for exciting for collectors and has allied with major retailers like Walmart and Target to give these outlets exclusive figures that aren’t available anywhere and are usually only minted in limited quantities.
The most recent of these exclusives is available only through Target. Adding to the lineup DC Multiverse MIDNIGHTER “DC Classic” Action Figure based on the hard-nosed, quick-witted brawler that is always ready willing, and able to stand up to bullies. The mysterious masked man is the brainchild of Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch and made his comics debut in 1998 in Stormwatch (Vol. 2) #4, published by WildStorm and later absorbed into DC Comics. The character was an instant fan favorite, an anti-hero flexing his impressive bulk, and prowess and ready for any beatdown!
What made Midnighter stick out most prominently from other heroes in the mythic DC pantheon is the hero’s publicly identifying as a gay man. Shattering the stereotypes, Midnighter looked and was styled similarly to Batman, even adopting the Caped Crusader’s black and charcoal gray colors as his own; he is a powerful marital artist and urban street fighter, and is considered among the best hand-to-hand combatants in the DC Multiverse. Weapons of choice are two solid lead batons that conveniently collapse to hide beneath Midnighter’s black leather trench coat.
Although he usually works alone, In the books, Midnighter has teamed up with Nightwing to smash an international spy ring of terrorists. The chemistry between the pair was electric leaving readers to wonder if Nightwing’s very thirsty alter-ego Dick Grayson would perhaps be attracted to Midnighter (especially when the pair share a steam room after a grueling mission) , but the one-time circus trapeze artist doesn’t swing in that direction. The two are good friends and trusted allies and easily can count on one another in a pitch. And besides Midnighter’s affections are fully focused elsewhere.
Midnighter has been a card-carrying member of several superhero teams, including Stormwatch and The Authority. It was fighting side-by-side with his teammate, the über-powerful Apollo that he developed romantic feelings for him. It wasn’t long before the pair became involved and as is with every relationship, they’ve had their trials and distractions, but would eventually tie the knot and become DC’s premiere gay crime-fighting couple. Their methods to the ends of carrying out justice may differ, but they make for a very formidable pairing ready to take out the bad guys.
UnBoxing
McFarlane Toys moving forward with the production of an action figure based on an uncompromising outspoken LGBTQ character is revolutionary. There just isn’t much representation in the action toy field, marking the release of DC Multiverse “Midnighter” as truly unique and special. The line may be marketed to appeal to the adult collector with its high-end attention to detail and sculpted precision, but that doesn’t diminish the fact that positioned right next to a comparably proportioned action figure in the line, Superman, the Man of Steel has an ally in Midnighter that bats for the other team.
Like the other figures in the McFarlane Toys, DC Universe line, Midnighter stands at an impressive 7” and is prescribed to possess 22 moving parts. The chunking construction and heft of these figures don’t make for very intense pose-ability (especially at the mid-section torso) as compared to Hasbro’s Marvel Legends which although smaller in scale gives you more to play with in the ways of moving figures into very cool action poses making them look like they're springing out of the comics themselves, especially given these figures very similar price points.
McFarlane Toys prides itself on its sculpting attention to detail and Midnighter does look very much from head-to-toe light the character fans are following in the comic series. The figure adapts a very familiar, “classic” and popular look of the hero, ready to pounce in his urban street fighting gear. His signature all-weather black trench coat is molded to match his intimidating brawler’s headgear, and his striking logo is embellished on his bullet-proof chest plate. The figure comes equipped with a set of two additional hands for more playability, and two of his battle batons.
Standing alongside the DC Multiverse, Nightwing, these two are ready to get back into the fight and protect those who can’t protect themselves. Display your Midnighter Action Figure today with pride!
