In a city of millions… no one can hear your screams! The requel is back and in this teaser trailer “first look” at the upcoming SCREAM VI it looks like the playing field has expanded and the body count will undoubtedly double!
Everyone had been wondering and it had become one of the most hotly contested debates on the internet. Following the success of the Scream “requel” last year, what would filmmakers Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett call the next chapter in the franchise made famous by Wed Craven and Kevin Williamson? Returning to the scene of the crime, the town of Woodsboro ignited a new killer to take up the mantle of Ghostface and stalk the generation of victims. It starred Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, with returning favorites Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, and David Arquette passing the torch.
Not entirely a reboot, and not necessarily a sequel, Scream coined the new franchise term “requel”, a mash-up of reboot and sequel, where the established narrative continues, but its legacy is re-established. At the conclusion of that massacre, it was revealed that Barrera’s character Sam was related to the first film’s killer Billy Loomis and that the town of Woodsboro had seen enough. She and her sister, Tara (Jenna Ortega), along with their friends Mindy (Jasmin Savoy Brown) and Chad (Mason Gooding) survive the final act massacre, along with legacy characters Sidney (Campbell) and Gale (Cox). Arquette’s fan-favorite Sheriff Dewey was not so lucky and his card was punched.
With the success of Scream (2022), it was inevitable that a sequel to the requel, would be called up and the filmmakers were more than ready to oblige, and the title is not the much-expected Screams, or as some anticipated More Scream, but Scream VI strategically placing this piece in its place. The surviving cast has moved out of Woodsboro and transplanted themselves to New York City. As evidenced in the film’s teaser trailer, no place is safe and even the subway is a killer’s hunting ground. Scream VI brings back Hayden Panettiere as Kirby, who survived the events of Scream 4 and will likely feature legacy cast member Courtney Cox, whose Gale Weathers reports from New York City.
Here’s your #FANSEYEVIEW of the new trailer for Scream VI set to premiere in theaters in 2023:
The original Scream (released in 1996) revolutionized the genre. It inspired an entire series of copy-cats slasher films that elevated the game and opened the way for the eventual arrival of “elevated horror” which featured complex characters with much deeper subtext. The recent blockbuster success of independent horror films from the arthouse appeal of “X” (also starring Ortega) to the gore-fest slasher flick Terrifier 2 has led to a resurgent popularity in the horror genre.
SCREAM VI | starring Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Mason Gooding, with Hayden Panettiere and Courtney Cox, directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett is coming to theaters March 10, 2023.
