Now on Blu-ray...SUPERGIRL

When the rest of the major networks were eagerly premiering their genre shows in the fall of 2014, CBS -- the #1 mainstream channel in primetime -- sat the session out...at least for as long as it could. Almost immediately and into the mid-season launch of 2015, the network heads at CBS immediately approached super-producer Greg Berlanti the man behind The CW hit DC Comic adaptations Arrow and The Flash and asked if there wasn't something that he and his team could come up with.

They already had something in mind!

Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg (executive producer on The Flash) decided it was about time for one of the ladies within the expansive DC Comics pantheon to step into the spotlight and headline her own shows. Sure there have been female heroes leading the pack in primetime before; there was Wonder Woman and later The Bionic Woman, but it took nearly two decades before Xena, The Warrior Princess won audiences in syndication, and then there was (of course) Buffy, The Vampire Slayer.

With audiences hungry for more DC heroes in primetime, the duo decided to bestow that honor on Supergirl and another Glee alumni Melissa Benoist was tapped to wear the famous cape, and wage a battle for truth, justice and the American way! Just in time for binge viewing Supergirl - The Complete First Season is now available on Blu-ray and proves that "Girl Power!" is definitely in! Supergirl premiered on CBS with huge numbers, and continued to soar in the ratings.

All 20 episodes follow the adventures of the Girl of Steel who after spending most of her life hiding in the shadow of her famous cousin Superman, is emerging on the scene as National City's own super-powered champion. Unfortunately for Kara Danvers (Supergirl's earthly alter-ego) her arrival on our planet didn't come without its own share of baggage. When her shuttle craft crashed on Earth it brought with it a notorious bunch of alien criminals that were banished and exiled by her Kryptonian mother.

Now Supergirl assists her sister Alex (Chlyer Leigh) who is an agent at the DEO a specialized super-secret government agency that works to contain the threat of alien invasions, while balancing her career ambitions as an assistant to Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart) media mogul and head of CatCo Communications. With the help of James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks) and tech-wizard Winslow "Winn" Schott (Jeremy Jordan) Supergirl has become a formidable force for good.

In her premiere season Supergirl has confronted the threat of super-powered metahumans including LiveWire and the Silver Banshee, while fending off other-worldly forces including the warlike White Martians and Indigo, while defending the planet from a Kryptonian terrorist organization lead by her own aunt. She's also made some allies like the Martian Manhunter and even shared a crossover adventure with The Flash.

When the series returns in the fall, it'll be joining the rest of its DC related primetime comrades over at The CW igniting a take-over of the 8pm slot on the network featuring DC Comics heroes. In the meantime, get caught up with Supergirl - The Complete First Season out now on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD.
