After releasing her chart-topping career-redefining album Control, Janet Jackson was liberated! No longer relegated to the shadows of her older brothers, the youngest sister continued to chart her path. In 1993, Ms. Jackson proved her metal beyond reproach by releasing her most provocative work — her fifth full-length album janet. unleashed an entirely new Janet Jackson, who didn’t feel dependent upon her surname to fortify her success. This new, more confident, mature identity was no longer shy or burdened with prudish expectations. janet. embraced a sexual confidence and energy that resonated with audiences.

The album featured several genre-bending hit singles, among them the unapologetic sex drive of “If,” which instantly encapsulated where the artist sat professionally and inspirationally on top of the world. The single has stood the test of time and remains one of Jackson’s signature songs. Undoubtedly, contemporary artists have looked to it as a template for their inspirations. Singer-songwriter Max Rae and electro-dance DJ producer Jeff Retro have decidedly challenged themselves to remake the track for today’s hot-and-heavy club-thumping scene.

Max Rae didn’t oblige herself to redesign the arrangement and kept much of it following Jackson's original interpretation. On the other hand, Jeff Retro poured some fuel on the track and ignited it with a beat-heavy underpinning that gives it a rough and dirty sound that is perfect for the summer circuit scene. The remix is far from the familiar rock guitar riffs and samples of the original but still rekindles the stark, carnal sense that made “If” such an outstanding hit. Pre-save the upcoming release, and check out Max Rae’s video for the track “Technicolor” below.
