Finding the balance between the traditional and progressive expression in today’s modern society can be a very delicate dance. Everyone begins to discover and assert their identities while quickly holding fast to the familiar expectations going back generations. No one wants to disappoint their loved ones while living out their authentic lives, and often, walking the line between the two worlds could be an all-new challenge to contend with! In the new romantic comedy THE WEDDING BANQUET, cultural and queer identities riotously clash, and then some!
Starring SNL cast member Bowen Yang and Golden Globe winner Lily Gladstone and directed by Andrew Ahn, it follows the misadventures of a couple, Angela and her partner Lee, who have exhausted all their means of starting a family, and their friend Min, who can’t get his boyfriend Chris to commit. Unfortunately, Min is also running out of options when his student visa expires, and he may have to return to Korea. He comes up with a scheme that might be most beneficial to the quartet: since he can’t get Chris to say “yes” to his proposal, perhaps Angela will be more inclined to accept!
Here’s the deal: If Angela agrees to marry him and secure his stateside status, he’ll happily fund the IVF treatments to help Angela and Lee start their family! It all sounds above board and easy-peasy until Min’s grandmother decides to fly in from Korea to participate in the big event, demanding a traditional wedding banquet to kick off the new couple’s good fortune. Determined not to disappoint her and keep the charade afloat, hilarity ensues in this heart-warming, poignant film about love, family, and the evolving dynamic of traditions.
