iFeature | TERRIFIER 3 Scares Up To #1 at the BOX OFFICE

In Theaters Now

All Hail the New King in town as the horror-gore slasher TERRIFIER 3 ushers in the hallowed season with an $18 million box office opening, murdering the JOKER sequel’s continuing decline.

ART

Tinseltown has crowned a new Clown Prince as director Damien Leone’s TERRIFIER 3 takes the #1 box-office lead with an $18.3 million opening weekend, as Todd Phillips’s sequel to his 2019 hit JOKER: Folie à Deux suffers brutal with an 81% decline (variety.com). The low-budget horror-gore slasher starring David Howard Thornton (@davidhowardthornton) is the third in the Terrifier franchise. It has become something of a cult hit with its core audience of horror film fanatics for its over-the-top, gruesomely visceral kills that have incited vomiting among theater-goers. It has been favorably reviewed by critics, scoring an impressive 77% on Rotten Tomatoes.

By contrast, Phillips’s musical foray into madness starring Academy Award winners Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga has failed to captivate its core of DC fans or cast the necessary spell on reviewers and looks to be left in the shadows, especially after an unimpressive opening weekend, and ending up third behind Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Ironically, director Tim Burton introduced the DC Comics arch-villain in his 1989 blockbuster Batman, as portrayed by Jack Nicholson, and returned to challenge The Joker with the star of that film, Michael Keaton, reprising the part that got him that role in the sequel to the 1988 comedy hit Beetlejuice.

ART THE CLOWN
Christmas comes early...

It’s perhaps an observation of fan service that has propelled Damien Leone’s Terrifier 3 to the top of the box office brawl, while many have theorized that Todd Phillips’s artistic, musical interpretation of The Joker mythology has rubbed the wrong way with fans of the originating medium. There is also the intention of the season as Halloween approaches. October is often the month when the studios release their lot of scary movies, timed to the tone, but this year, those options are few and far between, with Terrifier 3, the franchise slasher, and Smile 2 preparing to open later this month. Due to the many behind-the-scenes dramas, Scream VII, expected in theaters, is still working out the kinks.

This left the runway clear for Terrifier 3 to take the lead. Keeping with the established mythology, this third film in the series (and the fourth appearance of its villain) has Art the Clown (Thornton) on another rampage, chasing after his final day. The film opens with Art profiting a bloodbath upon a family in the days leading up to Christmas as he continues his relentless hunt for Sienna (Lauren LaVera) and exacts his unique brand of revenge upon her friends and family. Matching the previous film’s expectations, Terrifier 3 has played in theaters with a disclaimer that warns the audience of the film’s prophetic gore and violence and even supplies a hotline for those in need of filing a complaint.
