A Pop-Culture Event
The Queen of Pop teases fans across social media with posts of her hard at work and promises new music in the New Year! Could a sequel to Confessions be in the cards, or is she ready to release the live album from her most recent world tour?
The Queen of Pop has been uncharacteristically quiet of late. Sure, she’s regaled her social media following with interesting photos of the family celebrating the holidays and attending various art openings, including one for her son Rocco recently. Still, notably, news regarding her next creative steps has been relatively thin. That was until this week when Madonna took to Instagram to reveal that she’s been in the studio with her musical director and Confessions on a Dance Floor co-conspirator Stuart Price and that new music is coming in 2025.
Although the pair are seen in various phases of happily recording, relaxing, and frolicking with glee, with Madonna at the mic and Price busily hammering the dials on his production board, the pair did not tease what the “new music” project would be sounding like leaving her fans to wonder what might be in store from the duo in the New Year. Many have thought that with Confessions entering its 20th anniversary, the ground-breaking dance album would get a dust-off with inspired tracks urging the dance devotees to get together once again.
Pop Princess Kylie Minogue has yielded significant success with the sequel album Tension II following the release of its ultra-popular predecessor and has embarked on her most ambitious world tour yet. Has Madonna perhaps borrowed a page from Minogue’s playbook and decided to serialize the success of one of her most beloved albums? Is Confessions on a Dance Floor II in our immediate future? Others have speculated that Madonna and Price are putting the final touches on the full-length live album, capturing the greatest hits of the world-spanning “Celebration Tour.”
New Year, New Music
After wrapping its historic run in May of 2024, performing to a live audience at Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, audiences have been excitedly anticipating the release of the full-length live recording. Madonna has been delivering live album offerings since the 2006 debut of I’m Going to Tell You a Secret. The live album captured a select setlist from her 2004 “Re-Invention Tour” and was accompanied by the documentary of the same name. Since then, the Queen of Pop has released live albums of each of her concert tours.
“The Celebration Tour” marked a milestone in her career: four decades of recording music and embarking on a prolific journey that revolutionized music and pop culture. Undoubtedly, Madonna is preparing to release an album to mark the event. Price collaborated with Madonna on the tour, musically directing the music for the two-hour show. Rather than leading a full live band as she’d done in the past, on this tour, Price suggested Madonna perform to a programmed track that delivered the songs as they were initially recorded.
Whatever new music these two are working on, Madonna’s fans will likely hope for a dance-driven pop album. Her last studio album, Madame X, released in 2019, was much more inspired by world music and Madonna’s sojourn to Portugal; she found many kindred spirits that introduced her to fado music and opened the door to collaborations with a unique cast of musicians including Maluma, Quavo, and Swae Lee. The album was a modest success and parallels the artist’s ability to take risks in exploring new musical genres and styles.
However, we must confess that a return to dance music would be something her audience is eager for. We’re all hung up on Madonna’s ability to make us all dance and sing!
