The latest Marvel Studios blockbuster may star two of the MCU’s tiniest heroes. Still, The Ant-Man and The Wasp have heralded the next dynasty and courted the villainous time-traveling tyrant as Kang the Conqueror makes his intention for world domination apparent!
There are not one but two stars headlining the latest release from Marvel Studios (actually there are more than only the two), but in Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania the power-packing pint-sized Avengers are going where not a single one of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes has ever gone before. In the third installment of director, Peyton Reed’s saga putting the spotlight on Scott Lang (played by Paul Rudd), one of the Marvel Universe’s unlikeliest crime-fighter, the action moves into the Quantum Realm, where the Ant-Man and his allies face a dangerous enemy that is determined to control every aspect of time across all the multiverse.
Jonathan Majors (star of the HBO Limited Series Lovecraft Country) was first introduced in the final act of the First Season of Loki as “He Who Remains”. The audience is left to interpret that this then-anonymous character was just another variant that appeared to corrupt the timeline. Longtime Marvel fans are aware of the time-traveling Kang The Conqueror, an adversary of the Avengers, who has reared his manipulative machinations across multiple decades and has appeared along the way to wear many different faces. In Quantumania Majors’ character is revealed as Kang, a scientist who is exiled to the Quantum Realm and convinces Janet Van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer) to assist him.
Janet is eventually rescued by her husband Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), the original Ant-Man, and the combined efforts of her daughter Hope (Evangeline Lilly) who has assumed her mother’s secret identity of The Wasp, and Lang. In her absence, Kang has lived up to his reputation and subverted control over much of the Quantum Realm, and even though resistance forces have taken up against his tyranny, his iron grip has tightened. Cassie Lang (Kathryn Newton) has developed a technology that will give our heroes the ability to map the Quantum Realm, but unknowingly played right into the villain’s plot to lure Janet back and force her to help him escape to continue his conquest!
The New Dynasty
It’s a battle royale and even though Ant-Man and The Wasp may appear unevenly matched by Kang’s power, the heroes prove formidable, but even in victory there are substantial doubts that they’ve seen the last of The Conqueror. We are also well aware that the next film in the Avengers line-up will be subtitled The Kang Dynasty hitting theaters in 2025. It will undoubtedly tie up the next phase and will likely introduce an all-new all-different roster of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes that may reunite Ant-Man and The Wasp, and include Anthony Mackie’s winged Captain America, the return of Leticia Wright as Shuri, the inheritor of the mantle of Black Panther, and perhaps even Ryan Reynold’s Deadpool!
Kang is clearly the next phase of the MCU’s major threat! After introducing the complexities of the multiverse in the two previous installments of the Spider-Man and Doctor Strange franchises, an enemy that moves through time and multiple dimensions will definitely make things very interesting for the next crop of Marvel heroes taking the front of the stage. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has also confirmed that the much-anticipated introduction of the Fantastic Four is also slated for 2025, leading up to Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. Marvel’s first family has faced Kang many times over the course of their adventures.
As for the star at the center of it all, Majors has been reported as saying in interviews that he’s looking forward to going toe-to-toe with the Avengers and that with the rumored return of some old favorites, it is entirely possible that Robert Downey, Jr. may reprise his role as Iron Man or that Chris Evans may return as the star-spangled original, Steve Rogers. With Kang’s main power effectively altering timelines and changing history, Kang may face a force to be reckoned with. Jonathan Majors has admitted he’d welcome the challenge and fans would certainly be excited by the MCU reintroduction of either of these big stars!
